Even though I had a beautiful, fantastic birth for my third child, I was a little nervous about my fourth labor. And even though I definitely think the lift and tucks helped my little guy align in my pelvis, I still needed to deal with my nerves. Listening to my birth meditation , hearing affirmations that my body was capable, was the key step that took me from intermittent contractions to full-blown labor. My yoga teacher gave me permission to share the meditations she recorded for me.
Make sure you snag your own copy of meditations for labor and birth! There are other methods that are often used for stalled labor that are not effective. Sometimes, your OB may suggest an induction with Pitocin to get labor going again. Remember, your body has a reason for hitting pause on your contractions. Note: There are absolutely some situations in which an induction may be necessary.
This is where having a birth plan already made comes in handy. My OB did not suggest an induction because he already knew I wanted to avoid one, because I had a birth plan!
And I know I made the right choice, because my baby came only 7 hours after that conversation, no medical interventions needed. Sometimes, an OB or midwife will break your water to try to get labor going. While this might work, it comes with risks that might not be explained to you.
Remember how I talked about tricks you can try to help baby into position? Well, once your water is broken, these methods are much less effective. Generally, your baby should be born within 24 hours breaking your water, to decrease risk of infection. Trust me, I know how it is to wait and wonder when your baby will finally arrive. I know exactly how it feels to be on edge, waiting for labor.
Share in the comments below! Thank you so much for this! Trying to pelvic tilts now…. Thank you again for the insight! Oh my goodness! My name is Esther Sumon. I am in my almost 37th week, when my cervix was dilated, and I experienced a very strong contractions. I was later induced with pitocin. But, after the induction, the contractions stopped. I am so worried right now. This was an interesting read, the one thing that did catch my attention though. The only thing I felt was a stinging feeling from one of my babies moving down and pushing on my cervix.
But that feeling lasted for less than a minute then it was gone, my friend even confirmed baby was in position and we just needed to wait for me to dilate. Then when she checked my cervix again after waiting for some progression, baby had moved back up and by the next day my cervix was closed again.
Yeah, that makes sense, because you can start softening and even become slightly dilated for a few weeks. Thanks for the info and good luck! Woke up at 5am with strong contractions every 8 minutes. Took a shower and got dressed. Oh my goodness, good luck Jen! My fourth gave me such strong early contractions that I was on all fours rocking back and forth weeks before he was due.

What is slow progress in labour? Emotional stress can be brought on by a number of things having to do with fear about labor and delivery, an environment or process that is making you feel unsafe and violated, or sexual abuse trauma. This was the case for me. My body had been so violated with excessive cervix checks! My advice? Do not freak out! Just breathe. Change up the environment. Go for a walk, take a shower, watch a movie, and most importantly know your body so that you can tell your nurses and doctors what is right and feels most natural to you.
You know it best. Doctors quickly try to come up with ways to fix stalled labor medically with pitocin, or even a c-section as a last resort. Whatever the case may be, trust yourself first, take a moment to check in with your body and mind. The better you know your body, the better you can inform your doctor on how to support you. Having a good labor support team is crucial to helping the laboring person to release and work through these emotions, allowing labor to continue progressing.
Another common reason for labor to stall is baby's position. A baby who is not in an optimal position for birth which is head down and facing up , can cause labor patterns to be erratic and even stall for a while. The good news is that there are many tricks and movements mom can do in labor to encourage baby to get into a better position and for labor to continue progressing.
Certain interventions, like an induction, epidural, and restricted movement also can cause a stalled labor. It's no secret that staying as mobile as possible which can even be done with an epidural will help keep labor progressing. It's also no secret that an induction while sometimes medically necessary is forcing your body to go into labor before it's physically ready. These factors, along with the use of epidural which can hinder a laboring person's ability to move and interrupt birth hormones, can impact the progress of labor.
I will never give birth! You will, in fact, give birth to your baby. It may take longer than you anticipated which is the case for many women , but your labor will not stop indefinitely. To ease your worries, talk to your labor support team or care provider to provide suggestions to help get labor back on track doulas are great for this. Labor will be even longer. It's true that a stall in labor can make labor longer. But if you look at a stall in your labor as something that's part of the process -- or even necessary to get baby in a better position, for example -- you may be able to better accept it as part of your journey.
You can try different things to get labor progressing again -- or you can take this time as a blessing in disguise and rest up for the rest of labor!
